The health and safety of the community (including Melbourne Water employees and contractors) is our priority.

To ensure we are protecting the community and Melbourne Water staff - and complying with the latest state health advice - our customer facing sites* (including Western Treatment Plant) remain closed to visitors until further notice.

We have been closely monitoring announcements by the Victorian Government on the changing of restrictions and are strictly following the directive to continue to work from home.

The ongoing supply of our essential services – water, sewage, waterways and drainage is priority for our operational staff. As the Western Treatment Plant is an operational site, we need to ensure Melbourne Water staff are available to undertake their daily critical work.

All of our teams (including operational functions) are working under segregation protocols and our workforce is predominantly working remotely. Core operational staff are still working on site and in the field while complying with safe distancing and additional hygiene measures.

Unfortunately, this means we are unable to open public visitation to the Western Treatment Plant birdwatching areas until further notice. We understand the eagerness to get back onto site to take part in birdwatching, and we can’t wait until we can allow people to return again.

We expect a slow and incremental lift in restrictions by State and Federal governments, which will only continue if there is not a rise in cases of COVID-19. Your patience and support are appreciated as we seek to progress with re-opening our sites over the months ahead.

Details will be communicated as soon as circumstances change and we can allow people to access our birdwatching areas again.
