COVID-19 Update for birdwatching

To ensure the ongoing safety of our staff at key locations, and the provision of essential services, Melbourne Water sites* (including the Western Treatment Plant) will remain closed after 29 October 2021 to all except those performing critical operational roles.

Unfortunately, this means we are unable to open access to birdwatchers at the Western Treatment Plant at this time.

We are working through the advice from the Victorian Chief Health Officer as it is released, as Victoria continues to progress through its roadmap and we will begin to see more easing of restrictions.

It is forecast that additional relaxation of restrictions may occur from 24 November 2021 as vaccination thresholds are reached. We are monitoring these and the associated State Government directions to inform our plan to reopen for public visitations to our sites, including to our birdwatching areas.

Your patience is appreciated and we can’t wait to welcome birdwatchers back to the Western Treatment Plant in the near future! We know you’ve missed the place as much as we have missed you all!

Details will be communicated as soon as circumstances change and we can allow people to access our birdwatching areas again.

Until we can have you visit us again, we hope you'll enjoy a recently filmed guided tour of the bird habitat at WTP, or explore the WTP through our virtual tour featuring 360-degree views, interesting facts and videos.
