Our young people play an important role in the future health of Dandenong Creek.

By better understanding the effects of their actions on the creek, young people are more likely to contribute to its protection for future generations.

To foster this understanding, Melbourne Water developed The Creek Project in collaboration with scientists at RMIT University and piloted it with two local schools in 2021.

The program is continuing in 2022 and 2024 and we are currently seeking expressions of interest from schools in the Dandenong Creek Middle Sub-Catchment.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Creek Project comprises three classroom sessions of one to two hours each and a morning at the creek.

Activities vary according to year level, but include:

  • learning about the natural and urban water cycles
  • learning about water pollution
  • testing water quality at the creek
  • sampling ‘waterbugs’ (macroinvertebrates)
  • comparing urban and forested sites
  • analysing data and drawing conclusions about the health of the creek
  • learning how to reduce pollution and promote biodiversity
  • discovering the work of community conservation groups

The program is suitable for years 4 to 10. As part of Phase 2 of Enhancing our Dandenong Creek, it is currently being offered to schools and groups between Bayswater North and Wheelers Hill in the Dandenong Creek Middle Sub-Catchment.

A shortened version of the program is also available for Scouts groups.

The Creek Project is sponsored by Melbourne Water, but schools are responsible for transporting their students to and from the creek.

The excursion site will be determined by our aquatic ecologist based on the location of the school and conditions at the time.

What happens after the project? Put your school on the map!

The Creek Project is only the beginning! We ask schools to keep in touch and share photos and updates about their activities to inspire other schools. These could include their excursions to the creek, posters, art, poetry or work they've done to help protect the environment - for example, a litter clean-up. We will then add them to the map.
