Temporary closure of Maribyrnong River Trail

Melbourne Water is building a new sewer to connect the Maribyrnong River Main (MRM) in Avondale Heights to the North Western Sewer (NWS) in Maidstone. Residents and businesses in Melbourne’s west will benefit from this transformational new sewer, which transports wastewater to the Western Treatment Plant in Werribee.

While we complete works on the north side of the river, including building the new bridge and connecting the new sewer to the existing MRM sewer, the Maribyrnong River Trail will be temporarily closed. This closure will remain in place for approximately 8 months and will be on the north bank between the Canning Street bridge and the M102 water pipe bridge.

For the safety of the public, no access to the river along the northern river bank section of the trail will be available during this time. Clearly marked detours will be in place for the duration of the closure. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

A community bulletin with further details of the closure and detour route was recently delivered to households in Avondale Heights and Maribyrnong. Read the community bulletin about the trail closure (PDF).

The Maribyrnong River Trail between the Canning Street bridge and M102 water pipe bridge will be closed. The detour will go via Canning Street, Lacey Street and connect back wit the trail at Barbara Crescent

The solid blue line on the map shows the detour that will be in place when the Maribyrnong River trail is temporarily closed.

Construction update

You may have noticed our service provider, Safety Focused Performance Joint Venture (SFPJV) has set up site on the corner of Williamson & Hampstead Roads in Maidstone on what is now a Department of Transport site.

Satellite site facilities and fencing will soon be installed along the northern bank of the Maribyrnong River and within the Medway Golf Course on the southern bank. While Canning Street Reserve will be open, our trucks and construction vehicles will be accessing the construction site via Canning Street and along the (closed) section of the Maribyrnong River Trail.
