Leaving a long lasting legacy

We’re working closely with Maribyrnong and Moonee Valley City Councils to deliver long-term benefits for the Maribyrnong River and for the community.

We know Melburnians treasure our city’s open spaces and natural places. We gather, connect, relax and recharge in these special areas along our rivers and creeks. They contribute to our sense of place and provide opportunities to meet with family and friends for a walk or ride in a safe, peaceful setting. They also make for a much nicer commute to our end destination like our workplace, rather than riding or walking along busy roads.

Melbourne’s population is growing and our backyards are shrinking. The urban form is intensifying and more people are reliant on less space to exercise and gather with others. Rates of obesity, depression and loneliness are rising and people are more disconnected from nature than ever before as the pressure on public open space available for recreation increases.

Melbourne Water is committed to enhancing life and liveability for all Melburnians. We understand that access to open space and nature makes life better, healthier, more enjoyable and enriching for everyone. That’s why we’re working in partnership with Maribyrnong City Council to open up an inaccessible piece of land and building a new shared user path to enhance opportunities for the community to recharge and reconnect along this special part of the Maribyrnong River.
